The advent of new technologies has had a major impact worldwide. And it has also revolutionized the way we live. But it has also led to a condition called smartphone syndrome.

These new devices have become more and more present in our daily lives. And they have become an important element of communication, work and many other aspects of our existence. The smartphone is one of the most widely used electronic devices out there. Today, there are an estimated 4 billion people who own at least one of them.

And although these devices give us access to thousands of applications for all purposes. Experts have now been warning us for a while about the negative health effects with them. Especially in those who develop an addiction. The consequences of excessive mobile phone use are known as “smartphone syndrome”.  And this involves a number of physical and mental disorders that reduce the quality of life of those affected.

Many people are not even aware that they are suffering from this condition. They are unaware that their health problems can be linked to the use of the mobile phone.

Now, what kind of problems are associated with smartphone syndrome? Let’s take a look below.

Vision problems due to smartphone syndrome

vision problems

One of the first parts of the body that is affected is the eyes. This happens because the light these devices emit worsens our vision. What makes it even worse is that unlike other types of devices. Smartphones are often closer to the eyes, so the effect of the light from them is even stronger.

If a person were to spend 72 hours, non-stop, in front of the screen of the cell phone.  It will destroy 93% of the photosensitive cells in their retina. What most experts agree on is that the damage is usually irreversible. Which makes the problem even more serious.

There are now filters that you can purchase for the screen of your mobile device to block harmful light rays.

Muscle pain

If you use a smartphone for several hours without giving yourself a break.  It can lead to muscle pain in areas such as the back and neck. If you do not know how to handle the use of these devices. If you have them in your hands until the moment you fall asleep, you can be almost certain that you are creating pain and tension in these parts of the body.

Physiotherapists who have studied this problem reveal that the attitude most people have while using these devices is not the best. They recommend that you sit in a chair and use both hands to operate the device while it is lying on the table. Using only your thumb or one finger to operate these devices increases the risk of developing tendonitis.

Mental disorders

When a person feels that they are unable to walk without checking their smartphone for several hours, they are likely to suffer from severe episodes of common mental illness. The dependence on these devices increases feelings of depression, anxiety, stress and other negative emotional states that affect the person’s privacy, work life and social life.

One of the biggest influencing factors is that one has the opportunity to see what others are doing, as in the case of couples and close friends, and this can lead to worry, unrest, or jealousy, among others. On the other hand, we must keep in mind that these devices make many people socially isolated, because they replace real relationships with virtual ones.

Addiction

To continue talking about what we talked about above, it is especially important to talk about the addiction these devices can cause. In fact  ,  many have had to resort to psychological therapy to overcome their addiction to their smartphone.

The anxiety that arises has been compared to that of doping,  and some have expressed that they feel an emotional void of not having the device in their hands for a while. The connection to the internet, instant messaging programs and online communities is at the top of the list of things people feel they need most often.

The situation is so serious that some countries have opened rehabilitation centers for those who cannot live without their smartphones. Do you use your mobile phone in moderation? Now that you know about the negative effects of using it excessively, you should take all the relevant steps to reduce the amount of time you spend on the phone each day.
